From time to time you will get an apparently genuine email warning of a virus; it may even appear to come from a known organization such as Microsoft or IBM, or it may be forwarded by a friend or relative. If you get such an email, the chances are almost certain that this is a hoax. Give-aways include 'it will destroy your hard disk' and similar panic phrases.
To ascertain whether the warning is a hoax, (and lots of other information about viruses) go to the Symantec AntiVirus site or the and search for the name of the virus you have been told about. If the email is a hoax, please do not send it on to anyone, but delete it and ignore it. Do not reply to a virus-warning email. If you are not sure, forward the warning email to the Help Desk and we will investigate it.
