The quotaing system is now running properly on students whose N-drive is stored on the server Salt.
To check your quota limit, and the amount of files you have stored on your N-drive, open NT Explorer (right-click on the Start button, then left click on 'Explore'), right-click on your N-drive, then select 'Properties' from the menu that appears. You will see both the level at which your quota is set, and the actual total size of your stored files.
If you are over your quota, you will find that you are unable to open the Simeon Mail program, and cannot save or edit files stored on your N-drive. To unlock your N-drive you will need to delete files, or move files to a floppy or zip disk, until your stored files is 80% of the allocated quota, i.e. if your quota is 10Mb, then you will need to bring the amount of stored files to 8Mb or lower.
You can see the size of your files by selecting the View menu in NT Explorer, then click on 'details' to give all details of each file, including the size and date of last save. If you again click on 'View' then 'arrange icons„' then 'by size' you will have the largest files at the top of your file list, to help you decide which will be the best to remove. Remember to check each folder for content. The quota system will count any zipped files as their extracted size, not their zipped size.
Please remember, the N-drive quota is not the same as the Profile quota; for advise on the difference between them, refer to your Computing Handbook, or go to 'Using the NT4/Office 2000 system' and select 'Profile and Network Quotas' from the scroll-down menu.
The Help Desk and RBLC computing labs will be open at the following times over Christmas:
| Monday Dec 18th to Thursday Dec 21st | 9am - 5.15 pm |
| Friday Dec 22nd | 9 am to 12 noon |
| Saturday Dec23rd to Tuesday Jan 2nd | Closed |
Normal term-time opening hours will resume from 9am, Wednesday Jan 3rd.
SPSS has now been installed locally in labs Rf02, Rg02 and Sf05. This means that it will run faster in these rooms. To access the local copy of the software, go to Start> Programs> SPSS. If you have made a shortcut to SPSS on your desktop, do not use it in those labs.
If you are looking for some part-time work, and are interested
in helping people with their use of computing at college, see the careers office
or the Job Shop web page (from the Information for Students link on the college
home page) for more details.
Need a little help with your use of the college computers? Having a problem getting the right results in Word, Excel, email or PowerPoint? The Drop-in sessions start from October 4th, and run every Wednesday from 10am to 2pm. There is no need to book, just call in to the Student Study Support Unit in Eg16.
For some software links which you have set up by running 'Install New Software' last academic year, you will find the links no longer work. Simply 'reinstall' the software and your links will be corrected; this especially applies to Maths and IT students.
There are some new icons available under the 'Install New Software' link which you may want to look at.
If you need to see all file extensions in NT Explorer (eg: .txt or .cmd and so on), you can adjust your profile to enable this, by coming to the Help Desk and logging on to the machine on the left-hand side of the counter. This will load a new student profile for your logon.
Remember to back up any Favorites or templates before you pick up the new profile in case they get lost in the process; and you will need to redo any 'Install New Software' processes you have previously run.
Print credits for this academic year were added to returning students accounts on September 1st.
Visual Basic Help Files
The Help Files for all Visual applications are now available. To access the files, rerun the ‘Install New Software’ for Visual Basic – this will overwrite your earlier installation, and give you connections to the necessary drive
