Introduction

A virus can enter a computer in various ways
  1. Downloading files via the internet
  2. Saving or running attached documents via e-mail
  3. Floppy disks
Unprotected, a pc can be rendered useless or, at least, annoyingly inefficient though virus infection, recent strains such as the Melissa virus delete Word and Excel files from your hard drive. The College has introduced an anti-virus strategy so that your pc and its data are protected against infection at all times. NT 3.51 is no longer supported by McAfee since December 1999 - the College must upgrade all pcs to NT4 for reliable anit-virus software.

Full anti-virus protection of your pc is being introduced through the introduction of Windows NT 4 and McAfee anti-virus software throughout the college.

What is McAfee Anti Virus Software ?

McAfee is one of the leading anti-virus software packages. Their development of the product for Windows NT has made virus checking far easier than ever before. The anti-virus software is preloaded onto your pc when delivered to your office. The software is launched automatically when the pc is switched on, and immediately your pc is checking for viruses from outside sources, without any input from the user. Should the user want to check files personally then a facility called VirusScan will facilitate this.

An important feature of McAfee is that we are able to automatically update your virus checker for known new viruses (remember there are about 150 of these a month) so that as far as is possible your pc should be fully protected. Any viruses encountered will be detected at the very least, and most will be cleaned. A window message will appear on your screen to state that this is so, if the message does not state that the virus has been cleaned it is advisable to ring the help desk.

What if my pc does not run Windows NT ?

If your pc is not running Windows NT then virus protection is still as essential but not so easy. The best way to protect your pc is to check for viruses on boot up using McAfee for DOS, which will do a basic check when the pc starts up. Many pcs not running NT are not even protected by this. If this is the case download the following file:
