Access to information sources relating to American Studies is available
through the links below. They are only a selection of some of the
available resources. You can use internet search engines such as AltaVista, Mamma or InFIND, or information gateways

INFORMATION
GATEWAYS
Information gateways work in a similar way to library catalogues, in
that they allow you to search for information on a specific topic and
then direct you to relevant resources on the World Wide Web. They help
you to find quality information quickly on the subject
you are looking for.
INTERNET
TUTORIALS FOR ENGLISH AND HISTORY

Virtual Training Site,

free "teach yourself" tutorials
on Internet information skills for students, lecturers and researchers
in the fields
of English Literature
and History.
Guided
tours
provide links to some of the key Internet sites. There is also advice on
tools and techniques for Internet searching, and on how to evaluate
online resources.

SITES
- Academic Info American
Studies, a directory compiled by Mike Madin.
- American Journalism
Review News Link allows you access to the web sites for all
national and regional newspapers in the United States and the rest of
the world.
- American Memory American Memory
is the Library of Congress’s contribution to the US National Digital
Library. It consists of primary source and archival material relating to
American culture and history.
- American
Studies Association Home Page
- American Studies
Crossroads Project
- The British
Association of American Studies Website, a brief introduction to the
association, the benefits of membership and a list of personnel. The
conference CFP has also been posted along with a tentative list of sites
of interest to American historians.
- The English Server at
Carnegie Mellon University. The Server publishes texts in the arts
and humanities, broadly defined. Collections include art, architecture,
drama, fiction, poetry, history, political theory, cultural studies,
philosophy, women's studies and music and two journals (Bad Subjects and
Cultronix).

The Internet Public Library: United States (History) Resources
WWW
Virtual Library: History: United States is a well-organised
menu page where you can browse by chronological period or by
historical topic. There are links to many reference sources
and the site also has a search facility.

ELECTRONIC
JOURNALS
All the e-journals listed below are
published on the World Wide Web. This means that the full-text of
all the articles from each issue can be accessed electronically - no
passwords are required.
FindArticles.com
is a database containing "hundreds of thousands of articles from
more than 300 magazines and journals, dating back to 1998". You
can search for full-text articles within a specific magazine or within
all the magazines in a specific subject category. Alternatively, you
can search the entire database.
- Archives
of the West
- The
Avalon Project at the Yale Law School provides access to primary
source materials in the fields of law, history, economics, politics,
diplomacy and government.
- Bibliomania
contains hundreds of searchable full-text works of classic and popular
fiction, poetry, drama, short stories, dictionaries, research and
religious texts. Reference works include
Webster's Dictionary, Dictionary of Quotations
and
Simonds' History of American Literature.

Collection is a special collection of e-texts maintained by Michigan
State University Libraries. Subjects include: birth control, Black
Panthers, Klu Klux Klan, Rosenberg Case, Scottsboro Boys and Wounded
Knee.
ELECTRONIC SERVICES
- American Film
Institute Catalog (Chadwyck Healey service) contains comprehensive
information, including plot summaries and cast lists, on every feature length film produced or financed by American
production companies between 1893 and 1970 (excluding 1951 to 1960).
Search terms include title, cast and crew, character name, genre and
year.

- Art Abstracts is
a service on the internet which allows you to search for periodical
article references by subject and then email the resulting references to
yourself. Many of the references are accompanied by an abstract which

- Literature
Online is a fully searchable library of over 250,000 works of
English and American literature. It includes drama, poetry, fiction
and prose in full-text. You can search within one of the
individual literature collections

Third New International Dictionary,
or you can do a general search
across the entire database.

(Periodicals Contents Index) Full Text is another online
periodicals search service on the Web. Coverage on PCI extends from
the first year of publication up to and including 1990. You can
even find references to articles published in journals as far back as
