Access to information sources relating to art is available through the links below. They are only a selection of some of the available resources. You can use internet search engines such as AltaVista, Mamma or InFind, or information gateways such as the ones below to discover more.

Information Gateways

Information gateways work in a similar way to library catalogues, in that they allow you to search for information on a specific topic and then direct you to relevant resources on the World Wide Web. They help you to find quality information quickly on the subject you are looking for.

  • ADAM Information Gateway - Art, Design, Architecture and Media resources gateway; a searchable online catalogue of internet resources covering subjects such as fine art, sculpture, ceramics, metals, furniture design, industrial and product design, broadcasting, animation and museum studies.

  • The BUBL Subject Tree is a good starting point for all subject areas. More specifically there are links for various aspects of The Arts.

  • The Humbul Humanities Hub offers a collection of high quality links to scholarly resources on the Web. There is a section devoted to Visual Arts Resources.

  • World Wide Arts Resources includes links to artists, agencies, events, exhibitions, museums, galleries and employment vacancies in the arts.

General

  • Art on the Net (art.net) is a site which displays information about and work by many different artists from around the world. Includes visual artists, sculptors, animators, video artists, and 'hacker artists'. There is also an online gallery, a keyword search facility, art related events information and a list of related links.

  • Art'EShow (Artichaud) provides links to the web sites of French independent compositors, sculptors, painters and producers.

  • Art Guide : The Art Lover’s Guide to Britain and Ireland is a comprehensive internet guide to the art collections of Great Britain and Ireland.

  • ArtSource draws together networked information on art and architecture and provides pointers to many different types of resource. There are links to internet resources as well as original materials submitted by librarians, artists, and art historians, etc.

  • The British Arts Festivals Association (BAFA) is the independent association of professional arts festivals in Britain. Its web site acts as an online directory of leading professional arts festivals in the UK. Features include an A-Z of festivals, festival calendar and a listing by category.

  • FineArt Forum is an online magazine for the fine arts which offers art publication reviews, news and features, an online gallery and links to other sites relating to fine art.

  • The Higher Education Library Image Exchange (HELIX) provides 52,000 high quality images which can be used in UK Higher Education institutions in a non commercial manner.  Included are images of ceramics, drawings, engravings, paintings, photographs, prints, and sculptures.
  • Internet and Bibliographic Resources for the Study of Women Artists is a site run by the Center for Women’s Studies at the University of Colorado. There are many useful links to relevant research sites.

  • The Web Gallery of Art presents more than 3500 digital reproductions of European paintings and sculptures dating from 1200 to 1700. Many have accompanying commentaries, and there are biographies of significant artists, a versatile search facility and a browseable index.

  • WebMuseum, Paris : Famous Paintings Exhibition is an online gallery containing samples of the work of over 170 artists.

  • Aesthetics & Art theory

  • Aesthetics Online contains articles on aesthetics, philosophy of art, art theory and art criticism, information about aesthetics events worldwide and links to other aesthetics-related resources on the internet.

  • Words of Art : an On-line Glossary of Theory & Criticism for the Visual Arts is a site provided by the Department of Fine Arts at Okanagan University College, British Columbia.

  • Art History

  • Art History Resources on the Web is a comprehensive set of links to art history sites on the World Wide Web. For modern art, follow the 20th-Century Art link.

  • Ceramics

  • Ceramics: Art and Perception is the web site of the periodical of the same name. Features include an online gallery, sample articles from back issues and links to other sites.

  • CeramicsWeb includes databases of glaze recipes and material analyses, links to other sites, health and safety information, and also educational materials.

  • The Metropolitan Museum of ART: Ceramic artists page provides an alphabetical listing of links to individual ceramic artist sites.

  • Virtual Ceramics Exhibit is an exhibition of contemporary ceramics utilizing the internet as the gallery space.

  • Drawing

  • Drawings of Leonardo da Vinci is an online gallery of 28 of his drawings.

  • Painting

  • The Complete Writings and Pictures of Dante Gabriel Rossetti : A Hypermedia Research Archive is a searchable database of Rossetti’s work. Subjects covered include the artist’s paintings, drawings and design. A biography is provided, along with detailed notes and commentaries on each painting.

  • Henri Matisse Art Gallery offers access to an extensive selection of the French painter’s work on the internet.

  • Museo Picasso Virtual is a comprehensive site devoted to the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. It contains a large gallery of images covering the artist's distinguished career, biographical information, details of books about the painter, online resources, etc.

  • Picasso and Portraiture : Representation and Transformation is a website which accompanies the exhibition of the same name. Some of the works from the show can be viewed online and there is also a diary of Picasso events worldwide.

  • WebMagick Presents : The Pre-Raphaelite Collection offers an overview of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, with links to many paintings representing the movement’s three phases.

  • Photography

  • Black and White Art Zone is a site dedicated to black & white photography, with a gallery, archive, articles and links to other sites.

  • Black and White World is an online photography ‘ezine’ which includes monthly columns and articles, a monthly photo competition, photo industry news, and a Frequently Asked Questions section. It also features a Top Ten list of recommended black & white photography-related web sites.

  • The Digital Journalist is a web magazine devoted to photography and photojournalism which makes use of RealAudio commentary and QuickTime video. Included are photo documentaries, columns by photo journalists, and featured camera reviews. Previous issues can be accessed and links to other sites are provided.

  • The Digital Photography Exhibit is an annual international juried competition. The web site consists of both virtual images on the Internet, and actual prints on the walls of a "real" gallery. Exhibits from previous years can also be accessed. There is an alphabetical index of all the artists and a digital photography bibliography.

  • A History of Photography from its beginnings till the 1920s by R. Leggatt is an online script-only (no pictures) history of the first eighty years of photography. It includes descriptions of many of the most important photographers of the period and information on some of the most significant processes used in the early days.

  • Image Magazine is a quarterly online photography magazine. It contains illustrated articles on photography and photographers, a past issues archive, and links to related sites.

  • International Photo Gallery Project is an index of links to photo galleries around the world. Photos displayed in the gallery are primarily of nature, wildlife, art, people and history of the countries listed.

  • The Light Box Online Gallery provides an extensive collection of photographers’ portfolios, a discussion forum, and links to nearly 300 photography related web sites.

  • Photo.net contains equipment reviews, tips on traditional and digital photography technique, a gallery, archives and an extensive list of links.

  • Sight - Fine Photographers Online contains portfolios by photographic artists and illustrated articles.

  • The World Wide Arts Resources: Photography artists page provides an alphabetical listing of links to individual photography artist sites.


  • Printing and printmaking

  • Alma: Life and Work, 1909-1972 is a permanent online exhibition focusing on the life and work of Alma.

  • ArCade II an international exhibition of electronic prints held in 1997 at the University of Brighton, included works by eighty artists from twelve countries. Here you can find details about the participating artists, an online gallery and a slide show of the works.

  • The Floating World of Cyberspace is a catalogue of Japanese woodblock prints on the internet.

  • Keith Howard's Non-Toxic Printmaking Page is a site which offers detailed advice on non-toxic printmaking methods.

  • New Directions in Printmaking gives details of safe and environmentally-friendly printmaking processes. There is also an online gallery of prints produced using some of the processes listed.

  • The Posters of Toulouse-Lautrec web site has a biography and a digital exhibition of 32 posters by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. There are essays discussing some of the people and places which inspired the artist, and relating his work to artistic developments such as Art Nouveau and japonisme. A section on printmaking provides a glossary of technical print and poster terminology.

  • The Printmaking Links page includes over 130 links to sites dealing with printmaking and related topics. It also acts as a forum for a printmaking discussion group.

  • Printworks Magazine is an online journal which features artwork by contemporary printmakers. Information on printmaking exhibitions, conferences, news and events worldwide is provided, as well as information about materials suppliers and services. There is a permanent exhibition of works by contributors and there are links to other resources.

  • The Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas has a collection of Asian, American, and European art, photography, works on paper, and an Art Printroom. Here you can find printmaking information and a glossary of terms, along with images of over 150 prints by well known artists.

  • William Hogarth and 18th Century Print Culture is the online version of a commemorative exhibition to coincide with Hogarth’s 300th anniversary. His satirical graphic work is critically reassessed and the thematic sections of the exhibition demonstrate his deep concern with the artistic and sociological issues of the day.

  • World of Escher is a site devoted to the work of the Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher, with a gallery of his work and biographical details.

  • Sculpture

  • The Christo & Jeanne-Claude web site has been authorised by the artists themselves. It includes collections of photographs of the artists’ work, along with historical and biographical information about them.

  • The Greek Art and Architecture web site offers a database of images of Greek sculpture and architecture. The sculpture section covers reliefs, the female figure, and the Archaic, Classical, Late Classical and Hellenistic periods.

  • International Sculpture Center, an organisation based in Washington DC, is dedicated to the understanding and advancement of contemporary sculpture. As well as information about the ISC and its activities, you will find a Portfolio section which presents new work by member sculptors, an online newsletter and an online magazine. A Library section offers links to resources on historical sculptors, technical resources and relevant organisations.

  • The Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum in New York City exhibits a comprehensive collection of the sculptor's work in a setting he created. Through its web site you can find out more about the museum and access images of Noguchi’s work. You will also find biographical details and research and resources about him collected by the Isamu Noguchi Foundation.

  • Musée Rodin is the official web site of the Rodin Museum in Paris. As well as information about the museum itself and its activities, you will find details of the artist’s life and work and images of some of his sculpture and other works.

  • Philadelphia Public Sculpture is a photographic sample of some of the public sculptures from the city of Philadelphia, which has one of the world's largest collections of public sculptures, memorials, and fountains. Details of the sculptor, date, location, and inscriptions for each piece are given, as are links to more information about the sculptor or subject on other sites.

  • Through the Roman Art and Architecture web site you can access a database of images which include architecture (Rome, Pompeii, Athens and beyond), sculpture, and painting.

  • Sculptor.Org: a Comprehensive Resource for Sculptors offers information about resources relating to sculpture on and off the internet. You can find information about or links to: individual sculptors' pages, sculptors' associations, computer-aided sculpture, upcoming events, online galleries, foundries & sculptors' services, stone carving, wood carving, legal issues, grants and scholarships, jobs search facilities, and lots more.

  • Follow the links on the International Sculpture Center site to access Sculpture Magazine On-line, an international publication devoted to contemporary sculpture which can be accessed from the International Sculpture Center home page. It includes criticism, reviews, interviews and technical information, and also lists commissions, calls for artists, grants, residencies and workshops in its Opportunities section. There is an archive of past issues.

  • THAIS - 1200 years of Italian sculpture is a comprehensive site devoted to the history of Italian sculpture. There is information on many Italian sculptors, with biographical details and examples of their work. Movements and time periods in Italian sculpture, including Gothic, Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque and Modernism, are also covered. Images and descriptions of famous work from these periods are provided. From this site you can access sculptures from collections, museums and galleries in some of the bigger Italian cities, such as Florence and Rome. News about events in Italy’s contemporary sculpture community is also supplied.

  • E-journals

    All the e-journals listed below are published on the World Wide Web.  This means that the full-text of all the articles from each issue can be accessed electronically - no passwords are required.

    • FindArticles.com is a database containing "hundreds of thousands of articles from more than 300 magazines and journals, dating back to 1998". You can search for full-text articles within a specific magazine or within all the magazines in a specific subject category (e.g. Arts & Entertainment). Alternatively, you can search the entire database.

    Electronic Services

  • Art Abstracts is a service on the internet which allows you to search for periodical article references by subject and then email the resulting references to yourself. Many of the references are accompanied by an abstract which tells you more about the article in question. For a list of the 280 Art periodicals indexed on this service, click here. N.B. To access this ISI service, you will need to obtain a personal ATHENS account.

  • Grove Dictionary of Art Online is the online version of the print edition, containing 41,000 articles, plus over 12,000 links to important art images in galleries and museums around the world. N.B. Password not required. [Only available from the College network]     Requires Netscape 4 or Internet Explorer 5

  • Web of Science (ISI service) is a service on the World Wide Web which allows you to search by subject for periodical article references and then email the resulting references to yourself. Using the Arts & Humanities Citation Index within WoS, you can search for references to articles on Art. Coverage is from 1981 to the present.
