TUTORIAL FOR ENGLISH

Internet for
English, part of the RDN
Virtual Training Site, is a free "teach yourself"
tutorial on Internet information skills for students, lecturers and
researchers in the field of English Literature. A guided tour provides
links to some of the key Internet history sites. There is also advice
on tools and techniques for Internet searching, and on how to evaluate
online resources.
GENERAL
SITES
- Childrens
Literature Website. Internet resources related to books for
children and young adults; includes information on children's book
awards, bestsellers and publishers.
- English
Literature on the Web. Thousands
of individual writers' works and biographical details are listed
according to date of birth.
- The English Server at
Carnegie Mellon University. The Server publishes texts in the arts
and humanities, broadly defined. Collections include art,
architecture, drama, fiction, poetry, history, political theory,
cultural studies, philosophy, women's studies and music and two
journals (Bad Subjects and Cultronix).
- Indiana
University: English and American Literature. Arranged
by period and distinguishing between British and American sites, this
resource provides access to sites on writers and their works. It also
lists printed reference works and links to World Wide Web guides to
literature.
- The IPL
Online Literary Criticism Collection contains 2662 critical and
biographical web sites about writers and their works and can be
browsed by author, title, nationality or literary period.
- The
Literary Menagerie
is a site which brings
together all the known sites of well-known writers mainly from the
18th century onwards.
- The
WWW Virtual Library: Theatre and Drama is a well-organised menu page
providing links to resources in over 50 countries.

contains hundreds of searchable full-text works of classic and popular

Dictionary of Quotations, Biographical Dictionary of English Literature,
Roget's Thesaurus and Simonds' History of American Literature.

ELECTRONIC
JOURNALS
All the e-journals
listed below are published on the World Wide Web. This means that
the full-text of all the articles from each issue can be accessed
electronically - no passwords are required.
FindArticles.com
is a database containing "hundreds of thousands of articles from
more than 300 magazines and journals, dating back to 1998". You can
search for full-text articles within a specific magazine or within all the
magazines in a specific subject category. Alternatively, you can
search the entire database.
SERVICES

BHInet, the online version of the
British Humanities Index, contains abstracts from daily newspapers,
weekly magazines and academic journals, dating back to 1984. Subject
coverage includes the arts, literature, cinema, history, religion, and

Literature Online
is a fully searchable library of over 250,000 works of English and American
literature. It includes drama, poetry, fiction and prose in full-text.
You can search within one of the individual literature collections

PCI (Periodicals
Contents Index) Full Text is another online periodicals search service on the
Web. Coverage on PCI
extends from the first year of publication up to and including
1990. You can even find references to articles published in journals
as far back as the nineteenth century. As of this year, some full-text
journals are to be added to this service. For a list of English

Web of
Science (ISI service) is a service on the World Wide Web which
allows you to search by subject for periodical article references
and then email the
resulting references to yourself. Using the Arts &
Humanities Citation Index within WoS, you can search for references to
articles on English Literature. Coverage is
