Access to information sources relating to tourism and
leisure topics
are available from the links below. They are only a selection of some of
the available resources and you may wish to use one of the internet search
engines such as Alta
Vista to discover more.
In addition to the periodicals held in the Library, we
have access to a growing number of electronic journals. These range from
individual titles to on-line
databases that allow you to search across a number of journals.
- Electronic
Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers international
quarterly journal of geographical research. The full articles of back
issues are
available in portable document format (PDF) and you will need to use the
Adobe
Acrobat Reader to look at them. Coverage is from 1935 - 1993.

Orbit: Orbit
is published once every quarter by Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO),
providing useful commentary on a range of global issues, including the environment and tourism. Back issues are
available for browsing contents and sample articles can be viewed.

The Social Science Index contains references to articles in
Tourism journals.
INTERNET-BASED RESOURCES
The sites listed below are intended to get you started searching the
Net. There is at present masses of information on almost every subject,
it’s your job to evaluate and use the information according to your needs.
There are various self-teaching packages on how to search the Net.
- TONIC is a very good
example.
- LIST
(Learning Information Skills with Technology) is an online resource,
providing support in developing information skills.
Information GatewaysThese provide links to quality
information on the Internet, within specific subject areas.
- OneWorld: Specialising in
human rights, sustainable development and environmental issues, this
site has a distinctly global focus and
includes links to a large range of other useful web sites, news items,
magazines, and reports. The whole site is archived and includes a full
search facility.
- SOSIG (Social Science Information
Gateway) - A searchable database of quality information sources. Sources
are arranged under broad subject headings. The Tourism section lists
useful resources and is found by following the 'Economics' link from
the home page. Each
source has a brief description.
Other useful sites
- Countryside Agency - State of the Countryside
report: A useful
publication providing a range of up to date information relating to the
countryside in England, including tourism and recreation.
- Government Information Service
Under the Organisational Index, you will find links to government
departments and agencies, including 'Department for Culture, Media and
Sport' and 'British Council'. You can also search by keyword. It is a
useful site for finding out about the governments tourism policy.
- Northern Ireland's Tourism
and Business Information Site The Northern Ireland Tourist Board
and the University of Ulster have provided this site aimed at students
of Business and Tourism it provides information on tourism in Northern
Ireland and its contribution to the economy. It is necessary to
register to use this site.
- Rene Wakesberg’s Tourism Research
Links Devised for tourism researchers and industry practitioners.
This is a well-designed web-site, full of useful links.
- Sustaining
Tourism by Managing New Technology for Destination Marketing - A
full text of a technical report published by the Organization of
American sites. It examines the impact of the internet on tourism
marketing.
- Tourism Facts and Figures UK
- This site provides free facts and figures relating to tourism in the
UK including the top 10 visitor attractions by region. The
publications section includes access to some free fact sheets that can
be downloaded in PDF format.
- Tourism Concern -
This site is by a charity whose main aim is to promote awareness of
the impact of tourism on people and their environments. It includes a
search facility for the site.
- World
Bank - World Development Reports: All the World Development Reports,
an annual publication by the World Bank, are available here from 1992
onwards. Each one focuses on a different topic relating to global
economic and social development, and includes commentaries and graphics
on the topic as well as tables containing socio-economic data.
- World
Fact Book An online version of the CIA's world fact book, including
information on the geography, people and reference maps for each country.
- World Travel and Tourism Council
This site gives information about this organisation. There is a useful
search facility to search this site.
