SEARCH ENGINESThere are numerous search engines on the World

INFORMATION GATEWAYSInformation gateways work in a similar
way to library catalogues, in that they allow you to search for
information on a specific topic and then direct you to relevant resources
on the World Wide Web. They help you to find quality
information quickly on the subject you are looking for.

- Use
LookSmart’s Jazz, Blues and R&B A-Z to locate web sites devoted to
the musician you are interested in.
- WNUR-FM JazzWeb offers
sections on jazz styles, artist bios, performance (venues, reviews, etc),
jazz instruments, media (radio, television, press), jazz musicianship and
much more, including links to other jazz resources on the
internet.

MUSIC EDUCATION
- CTI Music,
part of the Computers in Teaching Initiative, works to maintain and
enhance the quality of music education and to increase the effectiveness
of music teaching through the application of appropriate learning
technologies. The CTI Music web page offers publications, services and
many useful Web links.
MUSIC THEORY
OPERA
- New
Grove Dictionary of Opera Online contains access to 11,000 articles
from around the world, as well as links to over 550 images. Subject areas
include composers, social history, conductors and directors, opera houses,
costumes, choreography and set design. N.B.

- Public-Domain Opera
Libretti provides links to the full text of numerous opera libretti
and other vocal texts in the public domain. Other links to opera-related
web resources are also included.
- Web
resources on Opera, Opera Companies, and Musical Theatre can be
accessed from the web site of the William and Gayle Cook Music Library,
Indiana University School of Music.

- Arts &
Humanities:Music is a long list of useful web links provided by
WebData, an Internet Database Portal. Each site listed is given a rating.
- Classical Net’s Classical Music
Informational Sites is a very useful set of link pages, arranged in
topic order.
- The Golden Pages :
Links for musicians on the WWW, maintained by the University of
London, Royal Holloway. Over 275 music links are provided.
- The Performing
Arts Data Service (PADS) , run from the University of Glasgow,
collects and encourages the use of digital data resources to support
teaching and research in the performing arts. There are sections on Music
and Dance, containing many useful links.
- The Sibelius
Academy in Finland provides a very impressive list of music sites. You
can link through to jazz, blues, pop and rock, famous composers, gospel,
instruments, theory, research, opera and much more besides.
- Worldwide
Internet Music Resources is a comprehensive site maintained by
librarians at the Indiana University School of Music. There is an
alphabetical listing of links to sites devoted to musicians of all genres
and pop groups. Other links include: groups and ensembles (except for
popular), performance-related sites, composers and composition, genres and
types of music, plus music journals and magazines, newspapers and
periodicals.
RESEARCH
- The Institute for
Music Research at the University of Texas at San Antonio exists to
promote research in the areas of music technology and music psychology.
Their web page offers various useful links.
- Internet
Resources for Music Scholars , a site maintained by the Music Library
at Harvard University, also provides some useful research-related
links.
SONG LYRICS
- The Digital Tradition Folk
Song Database is a searchable database containing the lyrics to over
6,500 folk songs. You can also browse by song title.
- On The Electronic Hymnal Home
Page you will find the music and lyrics for hymns, church music,
sacred songs and devotionals.
- J.S.Bach: Texts of
the Complete Vocal Works with English Translation and Commentary
provides text and translations of Bach's vocal compositions including
cantatas, hymns, masses, oratorios and songs.
- The Lester S. Levy
Collection of Sheet Music at the Milton S. Eisenhower Library of The
Johns Hopkins University includes over 29,000 pieces of music and
concentrates on popular American music from the period 1780-1960. You can
either search or browse the collection. An image of the front cover, along
with each page of music, can be retrieved where the music was published
before 1924 and is in the public domain.
- The Lied and Song Texts
Page contains an archive of about ten thousand texts to Kunstlieder
and other art songs in many different languages. You can search by
composer, poet, title or first line.
- Use Lyrics
World to locate the lyrics to pop songs from the last seven decades.
You can browse by artist or by decade, or go through a list of number one
hits.
WOMEN IN MUSIC
ELECTRONIC JOURNALSThere are various music-related electronic
journals available on the World Wide Web. You can access full-text
articles from either the latest issue or an archive of past issues.
ELECTRONIC SERVICES
- BHInet,
the online version of the British Humanities Index, contains abstracts
from daily newspapers, weekly magazines and academic journals, dating
back to 1984. Subject coverage includes the arts, literature, cinema
and

- IIMP
(International Index to Music Periodicals) is a service on the World
Wide Web which allows you to search for references to published articles
from over 375 music periodicals. Each reference is accompanied by an
abstract which tells you more about the article in question. For a list of

- PCI
(Periodicals Contents Index) Full Text is another online periodicals
search service on the Web. Coverage on PCI extends from the first year
of publication up to and including 1990. You can even find references
to articles published in journals as far back as the nineteenth century.
As of this year, some full-text journals are to be added to this service.

- Web of Science
(ISI service) is a service on the World Wide Web which allows you to
search by subject for periodical article references and then email the
resulting references to yourself. Using the Arts &
Humanities Citation Index within WoS, you can search for references to
articles on Music. Coverage is from 1981 to the
