Access to information sources relating to applied social science topics are available from the links below. They are only a selection of some of the available resources and you may wish to use one of the internet search engines such as Alta Vista to discover more.

RESEARCH ORGANISATIONS


DATABASES

The Library has access to both CD-ROMs and on-line databases. Individual on-line databases provide different levels of information, from short summaries of articles to the original article in full.

  • BIDS Services     (Username and password available from the library) Multidisciplinary.

     

  • Index to Theses
    Index to theses accepted for higher degree by the Universities of Great Britain and Ireland from 1970
  • REGARD
    Searchable database containing information on research funded by the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council).

INFORMATION GATEWAYS

Information Gateways are subject-specific sites which link to quality information on the internet.
  • ADAM - Art, Design, Architecture and Media Information Gateway.

  • BUBL (Bulletin Board for Libraries) is a good starting point for exploring network resources as it’s well-organised, and based in the UK.
  • HUMBUL
    Humanities Bulletin Board.   

  • OMNI
    Organising Medical Networked Information - The UK's gateway to high quality biomedical Internet resources. 

  • SOSIG (Social Science Information Gateway)
    A searchable database of quality information sources. Each source has a short description.

CURRENT AWARENESS

  • Mailbase
    By joining a mailbase list, you can take part in discussions with others sharing common professional interests,  A message sent to a central address will automatically be forwarded to everyone in the group.

  • Table of Contents 
    From here you can access the table of contents of recent journals.   

  • NISS conferences
    Lists current academic conferences and workshops in a range of subject areas

  • Internet Resources Newsletter
    A free monthly newsletter, from Herriot-Watt University, which aims to raise awareness of new sources of information on the internet.

  • Scout Report
    A weekly newsletter from Computer Sciences Department, University of Wisconsin which reviews new Internet resources.  There are also three subject-specific reports for ‘Science and Engineering’, ‘Social Sciences’ and ‘Business and Economics.’

  • Education-Line
    A collection of Internet documents on education, including grey and pre-print literature.  You can see the latest reports and contribute to the debates.
