  • DATABASES

    The Library has access to both CD-ROMs and on-line databases Individual on-line databases provide different levels of information, from short summaries of articles to the original article in full.

    • BIDS Services     (Username and password available from the library)
      • ISI Citation Indexes - Includes the Social Science Citation Index which is an index to social science journals with abstracts from 1990 onwards.
      • IBSS - International Bibliography of the Social Sciences

    • BIOMED    (Username and password available from the library)
      The Ovid Biomedical Service provides access to the following databases
      • CINAHL 1982-      Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature
      • Core Biomedical Collection 1993-      Full-text of 15 journals; includes the Lancet and BMJ
      • Mental Health Collection 1995-      Collection of full-text psychiatry and psychology journals

    • Caredata     

      Caredata provides access to a wide range of abstracts and some full text articles within the field of social work and social care. The database covers UK, North American and other English-language resources, including books, central and local government reports, research papers, publications of voluntary organisations and journals.


    • EBSCO MasterFILE    (Username and password available from the library)
      Full-text articles for over 1,000 journals and provides abstracts of articles for a further 3,000 titles. Periodicals are grouped into broad subject headings including Social Science, Medicine and Health Science.


    INFORMATION GATEWAYS

    Information Gateways are subject-specific sites which link to quality information on the internet.
  • BUBL (Bulletin Board for Libraries) is a good starting point for exploring network resources as it’s well-organised, and based in the UK. Click here for social work.
  • CCTA Government Information Service
    Links to all government departments, local authorities, quangos and political organisations. Includes links to the Social Exclusion Unit, the National Disability Council and the NHS trusts.
  • OMNI
    Organising Medical Networked Information - The UK's gateway to high quality biomedical Internet resources. Information on mental health and health psychology.
  • SOSIG (Social Science Information Gateway)
    A searchable database of quality information sources. Sources are arranged under broad subject headings, including Psychology, Social Welfare, Community and Disability. Each source has a short description.
